Heffley Celebrates Passage of Resolution Recognizing National Recovery Month

HARRISBURG – Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon), Republican chair of the House Human Services Committee, announced September 2026 is National Recovery Month in Pennsylvania. The designation follows the successful passage of a resolution he co-prime sponsored, which was approved on Wednesday by an overwhelming majority in the House of Representatives.

Heffley sponsored House Resolution 612 with Rep. Dan Williams (D-Chester), Democratic chair of the House Human Services Committee. The bipartisan legislation points to preliminary drug overdose data showing more than 2,800 Pennsylvanians lost their lives in 2025 and 850 so far in 2026.

“If addiction is left untreated it is always fatal,” Heffley said. “There is hope in recovery, and I’m encouraged by statistics from the Pennsylvania Department of Health that show fatal drug overdoses have decreased by nearly 50% since 2021. However, just one person losing their life is too many, and we still need education, prevention and efforts to support recovery. I encourage anyone who knows someone struggling with addiction to look for local resources and reach out for help.”

“Recovery month is a time to recognize the courage of those on that journey and the providers, peers, families, and communities who walk alongside them,” Williams said. “When we meet people where they are and make sure support is accessible, we give people the opportunity to take the next step to a healthier future.”
