HARRISBURG – Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) today took the oath of office to begin his sixth term in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives during a ceremony at the state Capitol in Harrisburg.
Heffley also announced that he has been reappointed to serve a second term on the House Appropriations Committee, which plays a key role in developing the state budget.
“I was truly humbled to take an oath to once again serve my neighbors in Carbon County. I look forward to working on their behalf on the considerable challenges that lie ahead as our regional and state economies recover from the devastating impact of the pandemic,” Heffley said. “As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I will continue to advocate for a balanced budget that does not place an added tax burden on hard-working families. I will also continue pushing to improve our local highways and for projects that create jobs and economic activity in Carbon County. Finally, my focus on resolving the addiction crisis will not waiver, as I plan to reintroduce legislation to assist in the recovery process.”
The swearing-in ceremony marked the official start of the 2021-22 Legislative Session. Republicans currently hold the majority with 113 seats, which includes the vacancy created by the untimely death of Rep. Mike Reese (R-Westmoreland/Somerset) on Saturday. Fourteen new Republican House members were sworn in today. Members also re-elected Rep. Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) as Speaker of the House.
To limit the number of persons in the House chamber, the oath of office was administered four times to four separate groups of members to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Members and guests were also required to wear face masks and follow social distancing guidelines.
Heffley represents the 122nd Legislative District in Carbon County consisting of the townships of Banks, East Penn, Franklin, Kidder, Lausanne, Lehigh, Lower Towamensing, Mahoning, Packer, Penn Forest and Towamensing, and the boroughs of Beaver Meadows, Bowmanstown, East Side, Jim Thorpe, Lansford, Lehighton, Nesquehoning, Palmerton, Parryville, Weatherly and Weissport.
